Seven police cars at Gypsy funeral after "violent commotion" - Derbyshire

From the Derby Telegraph

POLICE were called to a fight at a funeral at St Mary's Church in Derby this morning.

Reports of a "violent commotion" were made at 11.30am and officers in seven police cars and two vans attended the scene in Darley Lane.

Officers said six people were involved in a fight and one man was led away by police during the funeral for Johnny McCann, who had died, aged 63.

Police have now said that the service then moved to Nottingham Road cemetery for the burial and further fighting broke out.

Eight officers watched on as Mr McCann was buried.

A police spokesman at St Mary's Church said: "There has been some sort of disturbance at the funeral and because there were so many people there we sent several officers.

"No-one has been hurt or arrested."

Father Peter Ingman, who was conducting the funeral service, said: "I've never seen anything like it in my life before.

"Everything was going quietly and well and then the trouble started."

Father Ingman, from St Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Derby, said: "People got involved in it. There was pushing and shoving.

"For saying it was a big crowd there were only six people involved.

"Eventually the police led one of the people away who was in the middle of the quarrel.

"Things seemed to calm down after that."

Mr Ingman said it was a Traveller's funeral attended by about 100 people.

Matthew Lymn Rose, funeral director, said: "It was a bit of argy-bargy.

"It's just a large Traveller's funeral so the police got a bit excited about it."
