From the Hinckley Times
An application to build a Travellers’ site in Hinckley was turned down by councillors at this week’s planning meeting.
The application put to the council by applicant Freddie Price, to build three pitches, three day rooms, eight parking spaces and a stone surfaced turning area on land off Leicester Road, was turned down at the meeting on Tuesday.
The proposals were recommended for refusal because the site would be built on designated green wedge land and the application did not have the support of the Highways Agency, who felt that the proposal would lead to an increase in turning traffic onto the road where there is an accident record.
Ms Leader, who spoke on behalf of Barwell residents opposing the site, said: “The green wedge site shouldn’t be developed - it is an area of wildlife habitat.
“This is the second time an application has been put forward in two-and-a-half years.
“It was refused at appeal last time. This site is off London Road - a very busy road with direct access to several schools in the area, Asda, the Green King stadium and regular bus routes.
“This busy road will become more busy.”
Councillor David Gould (Lib Dems, Barwell) said: “There has been a tragic accident on Leicester Road and the Highways are reluctant for this to go ahead.”
Councillors also discussed that the borough council had fulfilled the level of Traveller sites needed in the area. The council has granted planning permission for 24 pitches across the borough that have not yet been developed, meaning the council has a five year supply of Traveller and Gypsy pitches and that there is not a significant shortage currently.
Cllr Smith (Con, Barwell) added: “It is only a short time ago that a government planning inspector turned down an appeal - now the application is even bigger than the last one.
“I hope the applicant releases that this site is not acceptable.”
