Travellers move into Cheltenham play area - Gloucestershire

From the Gloucestershire Echo

A FAMILY of Travellers have moved into a play area in Cheltenham.

Four caravans and three cars were spotted at a children’s play area just behind Hallmead Close, along Pilgrove Way.

The family, which moved in last night, have come from Durham. It is the first time they are in Cheltenham.

Neighbours at the site have both welcomed and complained about their presence, with one resident going out of her way to get new locks for her house.

A spokesman for Cheltenham Borough Council said: “We can confirm that there are Gypsies on council land and we are starting the necessary process to consider their removal.”

Police officers have spoken to the family about leaving rubbish behind.

A spokesman for Gloucestershire Police said: “Officers have attended and spoken to the individuals involved who have reassured them that they will be taking any rubbish with them when they go.

“Police will, of course, respond to any reports of anti social behaviour or crime, just as we would in any other area.”

There are four residential sites for travellers owned by Gloucestershire County Council, including 46 plots in Sandhurst Lane, Gloucester, 19 plots in Cursey Lane, Elmstone Hardwicke, 10 plots in Showborough, Tywning and four plots in Culkerton near Tetbury.
