Council seeking order to evict Travellers from Dewsbury playing fields - Yorkshire

From the Dewsbury Reporter

Kirklees Council officials will head to court next week to ask for Travellers to be evicted from playing fields in Dewsbury.

Around seven caravans moved onto Sands Lane playing fields on Saturday evening, but planned sporting fixtures were not affected.

A council spokeswoman said: “Cricket fixtures have not been disrupted as the group co-operated when asked by the warden to move the vans away from the pitches.”

A hearing will be held at Huddersfield County Court on Tuesday July 16.

Meanwhile, a large group of Travellers has moved on from Savile Town.

The group set up camp on playing fields at Headfield Road last Thursday, but left the following evening.

They are believed to have left the Dewsbury area.

This week Kirklees Council has fitted height restriction barriers at Dewsbury railway station, a site which has previously been used by Travellers.
