Solihull council urged to reject Hockley Heath Gypsy site plans -

A CAMPAIGN group is urging Solihull councillors to reject plans to hand over green belt land for use as Gypsy sites.

Residents Against Inappropriate Development are asking the borough council to reject a proposal that the land in School Road, Hockley Heath, could be developed for Travellers.

They cite traffic problems and lack of health facilities as reasons.

RAID consists of groups from Meriden, Hockley Heath, Balsall Common and Berkswell.

Meriden protesters are maintaining a 24-hour vigil after Gypsies set up an illegal camp.

RAID spokesman David McGrath said: ‘‘We are not against making provision for travellers but we want one rule for everyone.

“Near the proposed site someone was prevented from rebuilding a cottage because it was green belt.

‘‘So why should it suddenly be suitable for a Gypsy site?”
