Christchurch Council is proposing that its Grange Road Depot site will be retained for longer-term employment needs.
The strategically important site is currently identified in the Council's own draft pre-submission Core Strategy as suitable to contribute to the 80 hectares of land needed to meet future employment needs across the area up to 2028. Alternatively, it could be used for housing development.
The site was identified as a potential transit site in a county-wide study looking at the future provision of permanent and transit sites for Gypsies, Travellers and Travelling Showpeople. However, the Council believes that the site would be put to better use for employment land.
Leader of Christchurch Council, Cllr Ray Nottage, said: "It is important that the Council makes a clear statement as to how it sees the longer-term development of its Grange Road site. It is a priority of this Council for Christchurch to remain a thriving place to live and work, with high standards of housing and good employment opportunities, particularly for our younger residents.
"Local people have asked us to make our position clear on the future of the Grange Road site and I am pleased to be able to do so. That said, the Council will continue to work with all our partner authorities across the county to identity sites suitable for Gypsies, Travellers and Travelling Showpeople, both permanent and transit."
Council Members will consider a report at their Full Council meeting in April.
