Every so often there comes a moment when you believe a madness has gripped our land.
Such a moment came yesterday in the lovely county of Sussex.
You may already be aware of the story. Three years ago a family of travellers occupied a piece of land in East Harting. The occupation led to a planning inspector’s inquiry.
Eric Pickles’s local government department duly stepped in and ruled that the land was agricultural and that the travellers had to get off.
But the Travellers had more tricks up their sleeve, as usual, and are in the midst of appealing to the Supreme Court. They know they will eventually lose the case but they don’t care as every week that goes by is another week of cheap defiance.
They love giving V-signs to people like us. And yesterday they gave us a whopper. The Travellers bought a new mobile home to replace one of the smaller caravans.
Due to its huge size, the police had to escort the truck bringing it in. And the cops had to stick leaflets on the law-abiding villagers’ cars warning to keep them out of the way.
How incredible. We now have such a liberal society that the rights of travellers on an illegal site trump those of innocent villagers.
When is this all going to end?
You hear all kinds of bilge from David Cameron but he hardly ever touches on those areas — such as Traveller-related issues — that cause most upset in our society.
Is there no way to hurry this through the courts so these people know they will have only weeks, rather than years, of causing trouble?
Come on Mr Cameron, please express your outrage at these kind of actions. Do something that shows you are one of us.
Your continuing silence indicates that you probably aren’t.
