Council chiefs’ bid to evict Shrewsbury Travellers - Shropshire

From the Shropshire Star

Council bosses have applied for formal eviction powers to move a group of Travellers from a playing field in Shrewsbury.

Town clerk Helen Ball yesterday applied for an order through the courts to remove the unauthorised Traveller encampment from Ashfield Playing Fields, off Ellesmere Road.

Officials had already served notice last week for the Travellers to vacate the area by Monday but the order has been ignored and the half-a-dozen Travellers remain on site. They set up camp in the county town last Tuesday.

Once the order for procession of the land is granted, the town council and police will legally be able to remove the caravans and occupiers from the land.

Mrs Ball said: “We ask residents to be patient while we follow set procedures for dealing with these encampments.”
