Grandmother describes considered Travellers' site as a death trap - Carmarthenshire

From the South Wales Evening Post

A GRANDMOTHER has said a Llangennech site considered in a consultation for a new Gypsy site would be a death trap.

Anne Mathias, of Llangennech, spoke after three sites were revealed by Carmarthenshire Council last week.

A consultation into Gypsy Lane, Llangennech, Penprys, Llanelli and Berwick, Bynea, has now started.

Mrs Mathias said: "I know it's only a consultation, but have they considered the A4318, which is the main road into Llanelli?

"This road is congested as it is, there have been fatalities on that road.

"Gypsy Lane is right off that road, and any housing estate would be a death trap."

She also went on to criticise the other two sites — which were suggested by land owners and developers during a first-stage consultation with the authority.

"The other one, on Penprys is right by the crematorium — the crematorium would be overlooking it, I can't believe they're even considering it.

"I spoke to the council and they did say it's a consultation and nothing has been decided, but I will write to them," she said.

"They say these are the only three people with sites that have come forward."

Speaking again about Llangennech, she said: "There's already so much congestion there and they would be putting it bang on the traffic lights.

"There was a child killed there a few years ago, and a woman after that — I just can't get my head around it.

"It's right on the road. People come in that way for Llanelli, Pembrey, the race course, everything, and they want to increase traffic. We are trying to attract visitors to Llanelli.

"Also the school there is oversub- scribed, so where would the Travellers' children go?"
