TRAVELLERS have left Cosham after police used legal powers to move them on.
The group arrived in at least 10 vehicles on Friday on the King George V recreation ground off Northern Road.
Further vehicles arrived over the weekend and on Tuesday.
A number of people were trespassing on private land where security staff were later threatened.
A section 61 notice was served by police for the travellers to leave by yesterday. No rubbish was left behind.
Portsmouth Chief Inspector Beth Pirie said: ‘In using these powers, Hampshire Constabulary will always ensure that we balance the needs and rights of all our communities with actions that are proportionate, lawful and necessary.
‘I hope this action to move the travellers on from a location that was unsuitable will convey to all sections of the community that a robust approach will be taken.
‘We will continue to work closely with partner agencies, private landowners and the travelling community to manage unauthorised encampments.
‘I would like to thank Portsmouth City Council for its assistance in this matter.’
