SCORES of people have signed a petition protesting against the actions of Selby District Council in its decision to create a new Travellers’ site in Burn.
The council is in talks with the Homes and Communities Agency to buy up to ten acres of land at Burn Airfield to create 15 new pitches.
The site had previously been ruled out by the council, but a second survey claimed it was the most appropriate site.
Villagers said they were not properly consulted on the proposals, and felt it would be unable to support a second Travellers site.
Chris Phillipson, chairman of Burn Parish Council, said: “We are unhappy with the lack of consultation and procedure on the travellers site and the way they are doing it. They are steamrollering it through without listening to the views of the Travellers and the community itself.”
More than 100 people packed Burn Methodist Chapel last month, when Selby District Council leader Mark Crane addressed the issues.
