Travellers ask council for bins - Cheshire

From Warrington Worldwide

ANGRY residents called in council chiefs at Warrington after a large group of Travellers set up camp at the side of a busy road. But when council officers visit the site, the Travellers asked them to supply them with bins.

Anything up to 20 vehicles, including caravans, arrived at the side of Lumb Brook Road, Appleton on Tuesday evening.

Cllr Paul Kennedy was one member of the council to contact officers.
He said: "This is very worrying, as this is the third encampment in Warrington in as many weeks."

"The council has recently set up to identify and deliver a transit site, as well as a number of permanent sites within the borough to meet statutory requirements and, hopefully, bring an end to Gypsy/Traveller chaos."

A council spokesperson said: "We have been made aware of this encampment overnight and our highways team is in the process of working with partner agencies to allow the serving of eviction notices, following all the required checks."

Later, police and council officers visited the site and spoke to the Travellers. At that time there were eight caravans there.

The Travellers confirmed they had moved from Orion Boulevarde, Whittle Hall, said they would stay on the site as long as possible. They asked the council to provide them with bins.

Bailiffs have been instructed to serve a "direction to leave" notice later today.
