Ewloe Green Action Group delighted as Welsh Government dismisses Gypsy camp appeal - Flintshire

From the Flintshire Chronicle

CAMPAIGNERS are celebrating after the Welsh Government dismissed plans to build a Gypsy camp in Ewloe.

Applicant Martin Rooney appealed after his proposals for the site off Magazine Lane were thrown out by county councillors in January.

A three-day public inquiry was held in July, and this week an Assembly planning inspector dismissed the appeal.

The report listed ‘serious concerns’ over the living conditions on the proposed site and said a suitable noise assessment had not been satisfactorily carried out.

Residents said from the start the plans were out-of-keeping with the area and raised concerns about traffic, drainage and sewage.

They also maintained the ‘green barrier’ between Ewloe and Northop Hall should not be developed.

A spokesman for Ewloe Green Action Group, which was formed in 2010 to fight the proposals, said: “While we have sympathy with the Travellers’ needs, we have always maintained this is an inappropriate site for their purpose and we are grateful common sense has prevailed.

“We thank the community and our councillors for their support and for standing up against this inappropriate development in a designated green barrier area.”

Flintshire county councillor for Ewloe Dave Mackie added: “It’s absolutely vital to have these green barriers protected.

“Ewloe has seen a lot of development over the years and people want our green spaces to be preserved and enjoyed.”
