Royal Borough to 'force off' Shurlock Road Travellers - Berkshire

From the Maidenhead Advertiser

Travellers camped illegally on land at Waltham St Lawrence will be forced off the land if they don't leave.

The Royal Borough has said it intends to take 'direct action' if the 40-plus occupants don't quit Five Oaks Farm in Shurlock Road - although no timeframe has been put in place.

The council said it will first warn them it intends to 'serve notice' after which the occupants would be legally protected for a further 28 days before they could be moved.

The notice will also be issued to the landowner.

No date has been given for when the borough will make its move.

The decision was made at a cabinet prioritisation sub committee meeting last night.

Cllr MJ Saunders, cabinet member for planning and property, said: "Law-abiding residents have lived alongside the illegal settlement for more than three years and we are determined that this situation will end.

"The council is committed to the return of this land to a green and pleasant state and to recover from the landowner the council taxpayers’ money spent to achieve this."

Ten families set up home three years ago. They were subject to an eviction notice giving them 18 months to leave.

Time ran out on Monday but the Travellers told the Advertiser this week they have no intention of going.
