A TRAVELLER family has been given a stay of eviction – reprieved by incorrect drawings.
The Connors applied last July for permission for a permanent Gypsy and Traveller caravan site on Green Belt land off Jackets Lane, Harefield.
They have lived there for 10 years, surviving two public inquiries and despite the objection of the village’s MP, Nick Hurd.
Although the 2003 and 2007 inquiries permitted temporary arrangements after assessing the family’s health and education needs, Hillingdon Council members were poised to pass a motion last Tuesday on the advice of officers that would have eventually led to eviction.
Now the matter has been deferred after it was discovered that plans were incorrect. Councillors decided the layout of the proposed pitch was unclear, making it impossible to provide a resolution they were entirely satisfied with.
Michael Connors and his family remain in limbo, with no date yet set for a decision on the site.
Neighbours have written to the council fearing if planning permission is granted there could be a repeat of the situation at Dale Farm in Essex if further traveller families moved to the plot.
Mr Hurd, Tory MP for Ruislip and Northwood, wrote to the council saying: “I have been contacted by several constituents who are very concerned over the proposed planning application for the land to be used as a permanent Gypsy and Traveller caravan site.
“The proposed development will be in violation of Green Belt guidelines. I share their concerns and also wish to register my objection.”
Harefield Tenants’ and Residents’ Association, Northwood Residents’ Association, and Harefield Conservation Panel also complained, and a 64-signature petition has gone to the council. Two letters of support were received, although not from borough residents.
The council has a Gypsy and Traveller site in West Drayton, but is still in dispute with the Greater London Authority over measures to increase Traveller pitches in the borough.
