A group of Travellers in 20 caravans have made camp in a field which backs onto Maidenhead Police Station today saying they ‘feel safer’ being close to the police.
The Travellers arrived at Salters’ Road Moor, situated alongside Blackamoor Lane, Ray Street and Salters' Road, between midday and 12.30pm.
he group, which brought with them two horses, moved from Upton Park in Slough and were previously parked-up at Market Lane in Langley.
They plan to stay at Salters' Road Moor until Monday and have said they will relocate to Staines.
The group had attended the Christian Light and Life festival, held in Market Lane in Langley, which finished on Saturday.
"We are not going to provide any problems," said Traveller Dan Williams, who is living at the site with his three daughters and eight grand-children.
He added: "We didn't want to turn up in a clean park but we have nowhere else to go."
The 50-year-old, who has never previously parked-up on Salters' Road Moor, claims the Travellers feel safer by being close to the police.
"You can imagine how many problems we get from yobbos," he added.
Elderly residents living in Salters' Road sheltered accommodation, whose gardens back onto the green, are fearful the Travellers arrival will lead to burglaries.
Margaret Davenport, who is 78 and lives in the sheltered accommodation in Salters’ Road, said: "It makes me feel uncomfortable. They had better be gone by Monday or I will be onto the town council."
Margaret also expressed her concern about the two horses who did not appear to be on tethers.
