Gypsy site to be increased near Hurworth Moor, Darlington, despite concerns it will pave way for similar developments - Coounty Durham

From the Northern echo

PLANS have been approved to extend a Gypsy site near Darlington.

The land, off Snipe Lane, in Hurworth Moor, will be increased by 30m to accommodate three hard-standing plots for six caravans.

There are already three plots on the site and land for grazing horses.

The application said the extra space was needed to house extended family members, and the caravans would be screened from view by trees.

Darlington Borough Council’s planning committee passed the plans, despite concerns the development will encourage an increase in similar applications in open countryside and greater traffic using the A66 Trunk Road and Snipe Lane.

A report said: “There is an unmet need for more Gypsy pitches in the Darlington borough.

“The proposed homes will be behind a roadside hedge and approved Gypsy site, reducing their visual impact from Snipe Lane, and are acceptable.”
