Aberdeen councillor accused of betrayal over Travellers' site U-turn - Aberdeenshire

From STV

Willie Young, Aberdeen City Council's finance convener, has been accused of betraying those who voted him into office, over plans for a new Travellers' site.

Cllr Young tried to defend the local authority's proposal for the controversial site at a recycling centre in Bridge of Don. But he faced a stormy reception from many of the 150 people who turned up for Tuesday evening's monthly meeting of the area's community council.

Cllr Young came in for particular criticism over why he had been against a Travellers' site at Bridge of Don, when it was mooted by the Liberal Democrat/SNP coalition in 2008.

One campaigner, Steve Stuart, said: "He has betrayed the same people he was supporting.

"People who have bought their houses since then [in Bridge of Don] had no indication that there would be a Travellers' site being created.

Cllr Young responded: "The administration of the council has to look after the city as a whole.

"We asked council officers to identify a site and this is what they have decided on.

"They had been looking at other sites in 2008, which I thought were more suitable. But I will take what has been said tonight back to my colleagues."

A group of more than 30 protesters had earlier been left disappointed outside the town house in Aberdeen after the council's housing and environment committee decided to remove discussion of the Travellers' site from the agenda.

The matter has now been deferred to a full council meeting on March 6.
