Caravans burnt to the ground on illegal site - Cornwall

From the West Briton

A GROUP of Travellers camping illegally on land at Brea allegedly set fire to their caravans before leaving the site.

According to a witness, they torched the caravans and then stood around as they burnt to the ground.

The resident, who asked not to be named, said: "They set fire to four caravans over a period of a week or so.

"On one occasion they just stood watching, drinking and laughing, while the caravans burned."

The group of travellers moved on to the Cornwall Council-owned former mining land in June of last year.

The council has been monitoring the camp ever since, while looking for suitable land for authorised Travellers' sites.

Councillor Mark Kaczmarek, Cabinet member for housing, was dismayed at the damage and the mess left behind.

He said: "It's disappointing when Travellers do what they've done here. A lot of the travellers we deal with keep their sites clean and tidy.

"This site will have to be cleaned up and once again Cornwall Council will have to dig into its pockets. We seldom get behaviour like this."
