Travellers due to be evicted from Leigh Sports Village car park - Lancashire

From the Leigh Journal

TRAVELLERS who set up camp illegally at Leigh Sports Village are due to move off today after a court order was issued for their eviction.

A convoy of vehicles and caravans drove on to a car park at the side of the Sports Village stadium a fortnight ago after being forced to quit an encampment at nearby Pennington Flash Country Park.

A resident from Marshall Street, who declined to be named, said people in their area where “fed-up” of the disturbance the camp created.

“We can’t get to sleep with the sound of generators running until two or three o’clock in the morning. We don’t need this,” he told The Journal.

Leigh Sports Village Company Limited chief executive Mr Simon Toon said: “This has been a very difficult situation to deal with but a court order has been issued and will be presented on Friday.

“They are on a designated car park. Site owners Greenbank have been supportive and everybody has been understanding.”

Mr Toon said they were now looking at ways of preventing a recurrence of the situation.
