New Travellers' site in Datchet given thumbs up after 90-minute debate - Berkshire

From the Royal Borough Observer

Plans for a new Gypsy and Traveller site with 10 pitches on land at Datchet Common, in Horton Road, Datchet, was approved unanimously on Wednesday.

The Windsor Urban Development Control Panel granted permission despite planning chiefs concerns about flooding.

It was decided the need for the site overrided the flood risk as many of the Travellers who will occupy the site are living in overcrowded caravans at the neighbouring Mill Place site.

Flood risk concerns were alleviated by the fact the site lies on a 'dry island’ which rises above the surrounding high-risk flood zone, and the owners of the site would be signing up to the Environment Agency’s flood risk early warning system. Councillor Dee Quick said: “If anyone could up and move within say 48 hours, it should jolly well be the travelling community.”

However, due to the flood risk, the application will need final consent from the secretary of state.
