Travellers evicted from Mountnessing cricket pitch - Essex

From the Brentwood Gazette

Travellers that set up camp on Mountnessing cricket pitch, have moved on, but not without causing damage to the playing surface and club's maintenance equipment.

A group of 14 caravans and 40 travellers which moved onto the site at around 10pm on Thursday last week, were ordered off the next day, after legal pressure from police and Brentwood Borough Council.

By the early hours of Friday, Brentwood Borough Council had obtained an injunction and a possession order for the site which were served onto the Travellers.

In addition, the police issued their own enforcement action against the group, which gave them until 10am Saturday to leave the site.

Reports of criminal damage included grass cuttings being put into the petrol tank of the mechanical roller, periphery fences being ripped up and torn off hinges and incidents of drivers spinning their cars and doing handbrake turns on the wicket.
