Travellers create camp on Peterborough’s Embankment - Cambridgeshire

From the Peterborough Telegraph

Travellers with 12 caravans and associated vehicles have set up camp today (5 June) on the Embankment in Peterborough.

The group are thought to have moved onto the field just yards from the River Nene sometime during the night and early this morning.

The appearance of the camp comes while work is still being carried out to clear the field of the infrastructure set up to cater for the 13,000 people who attended the Olly Murs concert on the Embankment at the weekend.

It is thought the Travellers may have gained access to the site by breaking a padlock on a gate.

A spokesperson for Enterprise Peterborough said: “We can confirm that half a dozen caravans are on the Embankment having gained entry yesterday evening. The gate that was used to gain access was padlocked.

“Enterprise Peterborough will continue to monitor the situation and will facilitate a site visit with Peterborough City Council to carry out an assessment and begin eviction proceedings.”

A spokesman for Peterborough City Council, which owns the land, was not available to comment.
