Children get a taste of Gypsy life - Kent

From the Faversham Times

CHILDREN got to grips with Joe Grey, vardos, and even ferrets as they discovered more about Gypsy, Roma and Traveller culture on Friday.

Youngsters from St Mary of Charity Children's Centre, along with pupils from the neighbouring pre-school, were able to get up close with farmyard animals and learn more about Traveller families' relationship with the land as part of the community fun day. They made traditional vardos, or painted wagons, out of milk containers and were entertained with folk tales and music from Traveller Dave Arthur.

Abraham and Rachel Smith showed the children how to cook traditional dishes such as bacon pudding and wholesome stew Joe Grey.

The event was part of a celebration of Gypsy and Roma heritage, and aimed to promote a greater understanding of the community among the children.

Centre manager Kareen McKeown said she wanted to reach out to what she called a "hidden community".

She said: "The event was about highlighting different cultures and celebrating our differences. For instance we celebrated Chinese New Year, we don't want to just have Christian festivals."

She said she hoped it would avoid bullying among young people and make Traveller children who attend the centre feel more comfortable.

She added: "I think these events promote an understanding of different ways of life and really help to break down barriers, which is particularly important to do with children from a young age. It was a really great day and really brought the communities together."
