Travellers’ site raided by police - Leicestershire

From the Harborough Mail

A Travellers’ site in Market Harborough was raided by police this morning (Tuesday).

It happened at the Greenacres Travellers’ site on the outskirts of town, on the A6, near Harborough Innovation Centre, at about 7am.

Details are very sketchy at the moment but the Mail has spoken to the police press office and is awaiting a response.

Officers were barring access to the site this morning. An inspector told a Mail photographer that it was an ‘enforcement action’ involving various agencies such as trading standards, the courts service and utility companies.

Police could be seen searching caravans. There were about six vehicles including a police riot van lining the driveway up to the gates and about 20 people were involved in carrying out the raid.

Press check back on the website later this morning for updates.

Officers staged an early morning raid at the same Travellers’ camp in July 2009 to track down fine-dodgers, a suspected rogue trader and an escaped prisoner.
