Travellers Move Into Fairfield Recreational Ground - London

From Community Upon Thames

Kingston’s Fairfield recreational park, home to the May Merrie event, has found itself with some new inhabitants. The council noticed on Monday afternoon, at around 2.45pm that around 4 caravans and a few other vehicles had managed to enter the grounds, yet when asked to leave they refused.

Workers from the council are manning the area by blocking the entrance gate with a pickup truck. To ensure that the situation does not become violent or confrontational, the council workers are under instruction to allow them to leave if they wish but also allow re-entry if they want to return.

The police are now said to be dealing with the issue and hope to have them removed by the end of the week.

The responses to the new residents has been mixed, one local described it as “disgusting” whereas one of the many local schools St. Joseph’s Catholic primary (which is opposite the fields), said “they didn’t even know they were there.” So obviously the Travellers have not had too much of an impact.
