Travellers art exhibition launched in Abbeyfeale - Ireland

From the Limerick Leader

A UNIQUE exhibition of artwork by members of the travelling community, which centres on exploring their identity, is to open in Abbeyfeale next week.

Limerick County Council, working with the Limerick county inter agency Traveller group, is hosting the exhibition, which has been put together to mark Traveller Pride Week from June 18-26.

More than 20 Travellers from Abbeyfeale have taken part in the print and art project, and their collective efforts were unveiled this Wednesday, June 20.

Josephine Cotter-Coughlan, director of services with Limerick County Council and chairperson of the inter agency traveller group, said: “this initiative is aimed at promoting traveller culture and we are delighted that the finished art works will be exhibited in Abbeyfeale during Traveller Pride week. A similar project was completed by Travellers in Rathkeale earlier this year, and the exhibition was officially launched by Minister Jimmy Deenihan”.

The project was tutored by Limerick artist Richard Hannafin, who said that it overlaps with the theme of Traveller Pride Week.

“This project explored the theme of identity... although not all the participants involved are from the travelling community, they all have spent a significant amount of time in the centre together. Working collaboratively, all the students completed a mosaic and a mixed media piece which relates to the identity theme.

“It is hoped that this project brings to the fore the important work completed by students and tutors alike over the years”, he added.

Traveller Pride Week runs from June 18 to 26. The aim of the week is to celebrate the contribution Travellers make to local communities and Irish society.
