Travellers leave town - Cumbria

From the Sun

THIS is the filthy mess left after thousands of Travellers and tourists swept through a market town.

Baby wipes, faeces, bottles, cans and chip trays were among mountains of rubbish ruining fields and bridle paths in Appleby, Cumbria, following its six-day horse fair.

As a small number of locals tried to clear the rubbish from the site, one resident who did not want to be named claimed the council would not even clear up the mess.

He said: “The council does a fantastic job on the public highways, but on the bridle-ways nothing gets cleared up and we have to live with it for the rest of the year.

“There is the litter, and the fact that it’s been used as a toilet.”

The local said portable toilet facilities provided around Appleby during the fair had not been serviced regularly enough during the event.

He added: “They got serviced once a day. They are filthy and overflowing. You wouldn’t let your dog use them.

“It’s an absolute disgrace. Some areas look like a refuse tip and an open sewer.”

Appleby Horse fair is the world’s biggest gathering of Gypsies and Travellers, dating back to 1685.

About 10,000 Gypsies and Travellers and a further 30,000 visitors attended the event, which started on June 6.
