Sites finally identified for Gypsy groups - Warwickshire

From the Leamington Observer

THE CONTROVERSIAL issue of where to place permanent sites for Gypsies and Travellers in Warwick district is finally set to be tackled.

Despite a Secretary of State edict to local authorities back in late 2011 – stating local authorities must identify such sites – no progress was made by Warwick District Council and the authority itself admitted its shortcomings earlier this year by saying there was clearly an “unmet need for permanent Gypsy and Traveller pitches” in the area.

But a series of potential sites have now been earmarked. (see box)

District councillor Les Caborn, the lead councillor for the plan, said: “It is vital that we provide for the housing needs of everyone, including for Gypsies and Travellers.

“We know this is an emotive issue, but it is something we must address. I believe the site options put forward provide a good range of possibilities.

“I am a firm believer that by providing these sites we can minimise the tensions across all our communities. By having identified sites we will be able to deal more effectively and quickly with illegal sites and encampments which is a current community concern.”

The council said it needed to find 31 permanent pitched for such groups over the next 15 years, with 25 of those to be confirmed within the next five years.

The possible site options under consideration include sites in public ownership, sites that have been put forward by land owners and 'areas of search' which will include parcels of land which are not supported by the landowners.

At this stage no decisions have been taken and the council is keen to hear what the public think about the options.

The consultation will run from June 14 until July 29. Visit www.warwickdc.gov.uk for a list of consultation events and exhibitions being held in the area.
