Plymouth City Council defends time taken to move Travellers - Devon

From the Plymouth Herald

CITY bosses have been criticised for taking too long to move on a large group of Travellers.

As reported in The Herald yesterday the Travellers, with about 30 caravans, spent two weeks parked on Horsham Fields in Plymstock.

Cllr Kevin Wigens, Conservative councillor for Plymstock Radford, said yesterday: "I and other ward councillors are concerned about the length of time it took to get paperwork and court orders in place.

"We are frustrated at the appalling state of the fields and the cost to council taxpayers. We are pressing the council to make sure they secure these sites properly."

A Plymouth City Council spokesperson said: "We use the common law of trespass to remove unauthorised encampments. This typically takes three to four weeks."

She said the group arrived on May 19 and notice to quit was served on May 21, giving them until May 24.

Court papers were served on May 28 and the Travellers moved on before the case could come to court.

The gate to the site has been locked and the council is considering putting in other measures.
