Moray Travellers told to keep their distance

From the Northern Scot

SITES for Gypsies and Travellers will not be allowed within one kilometre of existing settlements in Moray, a council committee has ruled.

Members of Moray Council’s planning and regulatory services committee have voted unanimously in favour of setting the minimum distance as part of new guidelines to govern where Gypsy/Traveller sites are permitted.

This was despite a representative of the Gypsy/Traveller community describing the policy as "a form of apartheid" and "inconsistent with other rights and entitlements".

Mark Cross, a principal planning officer with Moray Council, pointed out at the committee meeting this week that the Moray Local Plan 2008, which is still used by the council, does not include a specific policy regarding Gypsy/Traveller sites.

The council has been criticised for failing to comply with Scottish planning policy in this respect, Mr Cross wrote in a report that went to the committee.
