DORCHESTER: Gypsy heritage comes to borough gardens - Dorset

From the View From Online

One Gypsy family travelled from Birmingham to take part in this year’s Gypsy, Roma and travelling people event in Dorchester’s Borough Gardens.

Two traditional Gypsy caravans were open for the event with several people demonstrating traditional woodcraft skills such as peg making, bender building and willow weaving.

There was also music on the mandolin from Dave Rawlins for visitors, together with information stalls about a way of life which, although declining, still exists.

Dorset used to be a county which had a high Gypsy and Traveller population with many families working on local farms.

The event was organised by the South West Dorset Multicultural Network in partnership with others including community workers from the Dorset Healthcare University Foundation Trust.

Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month was started in 2008, to highlight and help raise awareness of these communities and their contributions to society and to offset the negative stereotyping and prejudices that have led to hate crime, bullying and physical violence towards people identified as belonging to this community.
