Views sought on Gypsy land in Hartlepool - County Durham

From the Hartlepool Mail

PEOPLE are being urged to have their say on a shortlist of potential Gypsy and Traveller sites in Hartlepool.

Hartlepool Borough Council has launched a consultation on the issue and a host of events for residents to comment are planned at community centres and schools.

The consultation has been arranged after a public inspection into Hartlepool’s Local Plan was halted by Government inspector Kevin Ward earlier this year.

He was concerned the council had not put forward any private land in town for Traveller sites to be included in the plan and asked officers to come back with suggestions.

They have drawn up a shortlist of 13 potential sites but say only one or two will be needed to meet their requirement.

Tom Britcliffe, the council’s planning policy team leader, said: “It’s very important that as many people as possible give us their views on the shortlisted sites.

“It should be noted that only one site or a combination of two small sites will be developed to meet the requirement for between six and 10 Traveller pitches and because a site is on the shortlist it does not mean that it will definitely be developed.

“All the comments received will be considered and reported to the council’s Finance and Policy Committee in June or July before being presented to the Government planning inspector who will make a final decision on which site should be included in the Local Plan.”

The consultation began yesterday and lasts until Thursday, June 27.

The list of possible sites are land at West View Road, Throston Grange Lane, two areas in Burbank Street Burbank Street, Catcote Road/Macaulay Road, Wiltshire Way, Old Cemetery Road, Lennox Walk/Owton Manor Lane, Masefield Road/Gulliver Road, Hart Smallholdings East and West, near Hart village, and Summerhill, off Catcote Road.

The consultation events are at Brierton Community Sports Centre, Brierton Lane, Monday, May 13, 4pm-7pm; Masefield Road Community Centre, Wednesday, May 15, 4pm-7pm; West View Community Centre, Miers Avenue, Thursday, May 16, 4pm-7pm; Owton Manor Community Centre, Wynyard Road, Monday, May 20, 4pm-7pm; Summerhill Visitor Centre, Tuesday, May 21, 4pm-7pm; Throston Youth Centre, Wiltshire Way, Wednesday, May 22, 3.30pm-6.30pm; Burbank Community Centre, Burbank Street, Thursday, May 23, 4pm-7pm; and Throston Primary School, Flint Walk, Tuesday, June 4, 4pm-7pm.

A consultation document can be viewed on the council’s website or its Bryan Hanson House offices in Lynn Street, Hartlepool Civic Centre and all town libraries.
