Travellers move in near Fletton play area and cemetery - Cambridgeshire

From the Peterborough Telegraph

Anger has been voiced at the arrival of Travellers to a plot of land near a children’s play area and a cemetery in Peterborough.

A group of six caravans and two motorhomes are currently camped outside Fletton Cemetery, in Fletton Avenue.

The encampment is also near a children’s play area.

Councillor Nick Thulbourn, member of Peterborough City Council for Fletton and Woodston, said he had received a number of calls about the encroachment.

He said: “I’m not happy.

“It’s a no go area for the children because they’ve moved in.

“It needs to be resolved quickly.”

Cllr Irene Walsh, who is member for the city council’s Stanground Central ward, has also been contacted about the encampment.

Voicing concerns about their closeness to the play area and cemetery, she said: “It just isn’t appropriate and this is something which hits communities all over Peterborough from time to time. It’s rather upsetting for the residents and for us. Let’s just hope we see them get moved on.”

A police spokeswoman said: “We are aware and officers have attended. It is a civil matter and being handled by Enterprise Peterborough on behalf of the city council.”

A spokeswoman for Enterprise Peterborough said: “The Travellers have given assurances that they will vacate the site before the weekend.”

She added: “Although there are no health and welfare issues with the group, Enterprise Peterborough will continue to monitor the situation and will begin eviction proceedings if they fail to leave the site by the weekend.”
