Planning consent sought for Traveller site in Stainland - Yorkshire

From the Huddersfield Daily Examiner

CONSENT for a Travellers’ site in Stainland is being sought.

Calderdale Council will be asked to consider the plans retrospectively, because the Farrow family have already made alterations to the site off West View, Stainland.

Sarah Farrow has submitted a retrospective application for change of use from agricultural land to mixed use of agricultural land with stable block, container and yard area for stationing of a static and touring caravan for residential occupation.

She also wants consent for a shed, septic tank, access track, hard standing, fencing and storage container.

The land, owned by the family, falls within the green belt and a supporting statement says the family have occupied the site on and off for the last three years.

It says: “They moved on to the site so that they could ensure their children receive an education.”

They hope to continue the agricultural use of the land, with the grazing of cattle, keeping of pigs, ducks, chickens for eggs, geese and horses.

The statement adds “The Local Plan fails to identify suitable locations for Gypsy-Traveller sites in this district nor does it provide any guidance or layout criteria for Gypsy-Travellers sites.”

Calderdale Council has been in discussion with the family about the lack of planning from around 2011.

The supporting statement says the Farrow family work on local farms and engage with neighbours.

Three children attend local schools and they wish to retain a base in Stainland.

The application is open to public comments via Calderdale Council.
