PLANS to build a Travellers’ caravan site on a former transport yard have been rejected, following a number of objections from nearby residents.
The proposals involved erecting two static caravans, with an amenity and storage building along with a boundary fence and gates on Glover Street, close to St Helens town centre.
A council spokesperson said that the plans were thrown out because the proposed development would give the impression that “the site and its occupants are isolated from the rest of the community”.
This they say is in contravention of the Planning Policy for Traveller Sites and the St Helens Local Plan Core Strategy, because it didn’t “positively enhance” the site and integrate into the environment.
They continued: “The land is next to The Shires housing development, where most of the objections came.
“While some works have been carried out to the site, such as fencing and re-surfacing, the site has not been occupied and at the moment, is not being used for residential purposes.”
