Ladywell Gypsy and Traveller site rejected by mayor - London

AS expected, last night Lewisham’s mayor decided against building a Gypsy and Traveller site at the end of a residential street.

It followed a report by officers confirming that Church Grove in Ladywell was too narrow for caravans with their towing vehicles, which could end up riding up on to the pavement.

The decision marks the end of a long but ultimately successful campaign from people living there, who had always argued there were concerns over access.

Lewisham Council, which currently has no dedicated Traveller site and spent £11,000 on the Church Grove consultation, will now have to hunt for a new location.

The search is likely to look at privately owned places along with those in council hands.

Sir Steve Bullock also recommended finding an alternative use for the disused Watergate School, where the five-pitch site was intended to be located.
