Gypsy site fight is stepped up - Staffordshire

RESIDENTS fighting plans for a Gypsy camp near their homes are stepping up their campaign ahead of a meeting this month.

Families want to stop a permanent 12-pitch site being built at a plot off Parkers Road and Kent Lane in Coppenhall.

A petition with more 5,500 signatures has already been sent to Downing Street.

And members of the Crewe Against Traveller Sites (CATS) are now bombarding Cheshire East Council with protest letters.

A consultation period is due to remain open before the plans are discussed at a meeting on February 23.

Chris Handley, of Coppenhall, said: "The area chosen is totally inappropriate on a bad corner on a very busy road. It floods constantly and access will be dangerous not only for the travellers but all road users."

The site would have 10 permanent pitches with a warden's office. Each pitch will have space for tourer, a static caravan and two cars.

An access road would be created from Parkers Road.

The design and access statement says: "The proposal is designed to give visual and acoustic privacy – both for people living on the site and for residents living nearby."

The council identified the plot as a potential site after assessing a number of others.
