Travellers set up encampment at Nowton park - Suffolk

From the Bury Free Press

A group of Travellers has moved to Nowton Park after being issued with an order to leave Holywater Meadow, yesterday.

Approximately 12 caravans have created unauthorised encampment in the car park of the popular leisure spot.

St Edmundsbury Borough Councillor Frank Warby said the Travellers were not ‘helping themselves’ by moving to sites such as football fields and car parks that are in frequent use.

He said: “It does not help their case going to sites like that it angers people and people are going to get angry.”

Police received a number of calls yesterday afternoon advising them that several caravans were on the site and officers visited the car park.

This week St Edmundsbury Borough Council announced its intention to seek permanent injunctions as a last resort to stop unauthorised Traveller encampments.

The council has already implemented three-month section 77 notices for seven sites across the town.
