Important training opportunity for Gypsy, Roma and Traveller mediators

ACERT has been commissioned by the Council of Europe, to organise two free residential training courses for Gypsy, Roma or Traveller community members who are either employed or volunteer as mediators. Mediators facilitate understanding and dialogue between Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities and public institutions such as health, housing, education and social services. The course will be delivered by three UK based trainers Sybil Lee, Maneka Tohani and Lisa Hall. This is an important opportunity, although we have been given a very tight timeframe; the first 4 day residential course begins on 4th December 2012.

We want to make sure all community members whose work (paid or voluntary) includes mediation are aware of this course and have the opportunity to apply. If you are a mediator, please apply online today; you can modify your application later but let us know you're interested. If you know of other people who may want to join us, please forward this email to them or suggest they visit the ACERT website.

There are 27 places for applicants from across the UK and if selection is necessary, it will be made on 15th November. Our priority in making a selection will be to ensure all communities and geographical areas are fairly represented.

The course is primarily for community members.

Do you, in the course of your work, promote understanding between Gypsy, Roma or Traveller communities and public bodies?
Would you benefit from a total of seven days, high quality residential training, completely free of charge?
Could you be available between the 4th and 8th of December 2012, and a follow-up course in March 2013?
Do you fancy a trip to Brussels in January?

"The real intercultural mediator has a good knowledge of the “cultural codes” of the community and of the institution, is impartial and focused on improving communication and cooperation and on stimulating both parties to take responsibility and to be actively involved in a change process"
