Action being taken to evict Travellers - Sussex

From the Mid-Sussex Times

A COUNCIL has started action to evict travelling families illegally parked on its land at Burgess Hill.

Mid Sussex District Council received many calls from local people complaining about the unlawful parking of about 35 motor homes and other vehicles on the field alongside Royal George Road end of Fairfield Recreation Ground. The families are believed to have moved northwards from a site in Brighton.

Officials from the district council visited the site yesterday (Tuesday) to assess the situation.

Police can only take action against the Travellers for any proven criminal activity and the council as landowner has to start the eviction process.

A district council spokesman said today (Wednesday): “We have served a notice of direction on the families asking them to vacate the site by 6pm”
