Travellers set up home at Preston Park - Sussex

From the Argus

Travellers are set to remain on a popular park for the coming days.

A group of about 11 vehicles onto Preston Park in Brighton on Thursday evening after being evicted from Patcham Place, off London Road, Brighton.

The park, which has two of the oldest elm trees in the world, has been dubbed a “green jewel in the city’s crown” by city leaders.

But despite the praise, Brighton and Hove City Council officials have told councillors it will seek an eviction order through the courts.

This could take days.

A further group of about four vans also moved into the car park in Waterhall, off Mill Road, Brighton, at the same time.

A council spokesman said: “We visited both sites this morning with police and are now undertaking community impact assessment to determine the most appropriate course of action.”
