From the South Wales Evening Post
THE announcement of two preferred sites to establish a home for Travellers has triggered a vociferous debate from residents across the city.
Swansea Council yesterday revealed the results of its protracted process to find a new potential site on which to establish a base for Travellers.
The name of the two sites, the former greyhound racing track in Cockett, and Peniel Green Road in Llansamlet, was leaked to the Evening Post before the official announcement however, and readers have been quick to offer their responses. And one widely-shared view was that Llansamlet should not be being considered, as it is already home to the city's only other official site, as well as an official site on Swansea Vale's park and ride site.
Reader Cheryl Taylor said: "What a big surprise. Nothing on the West Cross/ Gower side of Swansea, but more sites for Morriston /Llansamlet, in spite of having official and unofficial sites in the area. How fair yet again of the council to take no notice of the publics views.
"It really is time to share the sites around Swansea on a fairer basis."
CityLover added: "It's going to be Llansamlet.
"This is just not fair on the people of this area, plus it's a gateway to the Enterprise Park and all the business that are located there.
"Well done Swansea City Council for putting us on the map and for the eyesore these people are going to create."
Other readers suggested possible alternative venues. Richie2803 said: "If you are going to put them anywhere, put them up Fairwood common, it's big enough".
Similarly, Lancelot69 suggested: "Why hasn't Swansea airport area been suggested? Ah, it's Swansea West. Nimby cowards."
And Lisa Davies added: "Well I think we have all learned they don't listen and there is little point trying to fight.
"They've already made their decision I am sure. Not saying we shouldn't put forward our views, but considering hundreds and hundreds sent letters on previous issues, our views counted for ... nothing."
