New holding site to prevent Appleby horse fair problems? - Cumbria

From the Cumbria and Westmorland Herald

A HOLDING site for Gypsies and Travellers could be set up in Eden — possibly using Ministry of Defence land at Warcop — to avoid problems in towns and villages in the run-up to Appleby New Fair in the future.

Robin Hooper, chief executive of Eden Council and chairman of the Appleby Fair Multi-Agency Strategic Co-ordination Group, told a meeting at Appleby that road traffic regulation orders could be brought in to prohibit the parking of caravans on roadside verges in Eden on a set number of days or weeks.

However, for the orders to be enforceable, there would have to be somewhere for the caravans to be moved to. “The reality is that we need to have somewhere for them to go and if they fail to go we can take their caravans off them,” said Mr. Hooper.
