Harlow Council to take legal action against Travellers camped in Tithelands - Essex

From the Harlow Times

HARLOW Council will take legal action against Travellers illegally camped out on playing fields in Tithelands if they refuse to vacate the land by Monday morning.

The group originally set up camp near the emergency helipad on Netteswell Plantation but were forced to move on after police served them with a Section 61 notice.

But yesterday the convoy of seven caravans and 13 vehicles rolled onto playing fields off Water Lane - and have so far refused to leave.

If the Travellers are still there on Monday morning, the council will approach a County Court judge to apply for possession of the land - the first step in the eviction process.

Councillor Emma Toal, portfolio holder for youth & citizenship, said: “The council is working closely with the police and we are in regular dialogue with the Travellers.

“Residents expect us to protect the town’s green spaces and uphold the law and that is what we will do.

“We have asked the Travellers to leave the playing field and if they remain we will take legal action to obtain possession of the land.

She added: “I appreciate that this is frustrating for residents and we are dealing with the situation as quickly as we legally can. In the meantime we will continue to work with the Police and monitor the situation.”

If the council takes the matter to court it will be the second time in three months it has taken legal action against Travellers.

Back in April, the authority successfully secured a possession order for Latton Common to evict a group from the site.

The subsequent clean-up operation cost taxpayers over £2,000.
