Children enjoy celebration of multi-cultural life at Leigh's Turnpike Gallery - Lancashire

From the Bolton News

CHILDREN and young people have been enjoying a colourful and multi-cultural celebration of Traveller life.

The Derby Room at Leigh’s Turnpike Gallery came alive with the traditional sights and sounds of Traveller communities to mark the end of Gypsy Roma Traveller history month.

The international annual event runs each June and aims to raise awareness about Gypsy life.

It challenges the negative stereotyping and prejudice often associated with the travelling community.

The junior Kamosi group, which is for children from various ethnic backgrounds aged between seven and 11, performed their own version of traditional Roma songs and dances. Visitors enjoyed an exhibition about Traveller life and children were given the chance to draw their own gypsy caravan and try traditional Romany crafts.

There were also circus skills master classes with Leigh-based juggler Sam Armstrong, from Circus Maximus, sharing his talent.
